How to download a GIF from X
- Open the post containing the GIF and copy its status link, such as
https://x.com/username/status/1234567890123456789. - Decide on the format. For a .gif file, open Settings and turn on convert gifs to .gif in the Twitter section. Leave it off to keep MP4.
- Paste the link above and start the download. In a post with several attachments, choose the GIF from the media picker.
- Open the saved file to check that it loops as expected.
No Xdownloaders account or extension is needed. Protected, deleted or login-restricted posts cannot be downloaded.
X stores GIFs as video
When someone posts a GIF, X converts it into a short, silent MP4 that plays on a loop. Without conversion, the download is that MP4. It is the same animation, usually much smaller and sharper than a .gif, and it works in most messaging apps and video editors.
MP4 or .gif: which to keep
With conversion on, the tool turns the looping video into a .gif. In one check, the same one-second animation was about 13 KB as MP4 and about 360 KB as .gif. GIF supports only 256 colours per frame, so gradients and photos may look banded. Choose .gif when a website, forum or app only accepts that format; otherwise keep MP4.
GIFs inside multi-media posts
A post can mix photos, videos and GIFs. Submitting the status link opens a picker that labels each item, and with conversion on, GIF items are delivered as .gif files. To skip the picker, add the item's position to the link, for example /video/3 for the third attachment.
GIFs have no sound
X GIFs are silent, so Audio only cannot produce an MP3 from them. For sound from a regular video, see Twitter to MP3; for full videos, use the Twitter video downloader.
Respect the original creator
Many GIFs come from films, TV and other people's work. Downloading one does not give you the right to republish it. Keep the source link and follow the creator's terms.
